FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Questions Are Welcome Here
It is common to have questions before beginning this kind of work. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. The goal of this page is to offer clear, grounded information so you can better understand the process, consider your own readiness, and decide whether a conversation feels like the right next step.
This work asks for time, care, and reflection. Some questions may be answered here, while others are better explored in a direct conversation. A free 15-to-20-minute consultation is available before the screening process begins, giving you a chance to share what is bringing you to this work and ask initial questions.
The Experience
-
This work may be a fit for adults who feel drawn toward something deeper, more experiential, or different from traditional talk-based approaches.
It may resonate with people who are open, or willing to become more open, to altered states of consciousness, self-reflection, preparation, and integration. Many people come to this work while navigating grief, trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, relational pain, life transitions, or a sense of disconnection from themselves, others, or the world.
-
For safety reasons, psilocybin services may not be appropriate for everyone.
This work may not be appropriate for people with certain medical or mental health histories, including a personal history of psychotic disorders or episodes, bipolar I disorder or a history of manic episodes, current suicidal ideation or acute psychiatric instability, severe or unmanaged dissociation, certain cardiovascular conditions, unmanaged personality disorders, or the use of medications that may be contraindicated.
Screening is part of keeping this work safe, supportive, and appropriate.
-
Screening looks at medical and mental health history, current medications, possible contraindications, current stability, life circumstances, support systems, readiness, and integration capacity.
It also gives us space to explore your intentions, expectations, concerns, and questions before deciding whether this work is appropriate and within my scope.
-
Not everyone who reaches out will be eligible to move forward. If psilocybin services are not appropriate at this time, I may recommend referrals, alternative resources, or other forms of support.
The goal of screening is not to exclude people unnecessarily. It is to approach this work with care and responsibility.
-
Support systems matter. This work can bring up meaningful, emotional, or unexpected material, and it is helpful to have support outside of the medicine session.
Support may include trusted friends, family members, a therapist, medical provider, community support, or other resources. We may talk about your support system during screening and preparation.
Integration
-
Without integration, insights may fade, remain abstract, or feel difficult to apply. Integration creates space to reflect on what came forward, process emotions or themes, and explore how the experience may connect to real-life patterns, behaviors, relationships, and next steps.
-
Yes. Integration is an essential part of this work and part of the regulated model for natural medicine services in Colorado.
At minimum, integration gives us space to begin processing the experience after administration. Additional integration may be recommended or requested depending on what emerged and what kind of support feels appropriate.
-
This varies. Some people may participate in one integration session, while others may benefit from one to three or more sessions over several weeks.
The amount of support needed depends on the experience, the person’s needs, and what feels appropriate within the scope of services.
Expectations and Misconceptions
-
No. This work is not designed as a one-time or quick solution.
The medicine session is one part of a larger process. Preparation and integration are essential to helping the experience feel safer, more meaningful, and more connected to daily life.
-
Not necessarily. More intensity does not automatically mean better or more meaningful results.
Dose, readiness, set and setting, support, and integration all matter. The goal is not to force intensity. The goal is to approach the experience with safety, intention, and respect.
-
Psilocybin experiences can involve altered perception, heightened emotion, and a different sense of time or self. That does not mean the process is unsupported.
The session takes place in a structured, licensed environment, with preparation beforehand, facilitator presence throughout, and integration afterward.
-
Many people have. Cultural narratives, past drug education, media portrayals, and misinformation can shape how people think about psilocybin.
Part of this work is offering clear, balanced information about what is known, what is still being studied, and what matters for safety, readiness, and informed choice.
Beginning the Process
-
The first step is to reach out through the contact form. I offer a free 15-to-20-minute consultation before the screening process begins. This gives us a chance to talk briefly about what is bringing you to this work and whether it may make sense to continue. -
You can expect a response within 48 hours. If it seems appropriate to continue, we will schedule an initial consultation call.
The inquiry form may ask about medical or mental health diagnoses, current medications, your support system, why you are interested in this work, and any past experiences with psilocybin.
-
No. Some people reach out with clear hopes or intentions. Others simply feel curious, unsure, or pulled toward the work in a way they cannot fully explain yet.
You do not need to have everything figured out before beginning the conversation.
-
That is welcome here. Hesitation, caution, and healthy skepticism are completely understandable, especially for people who are new to psilocybin or have heard mixed messages about psychedelics.
My role is not to persuade you. It is to provide clear information, answer questions honestly, and help you make an informed decision.
Legal, Ethical, and Practical Questions
-
Yes. Services are provided in accordance with Colorado’s regulated Natural Medicine Program. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies identifies screening, preparation, administration, and integration as part of facilitator training and regulatory structure for natural medicine facilitation.
-
Psilocybin facilitation is not the same as medical treatment, and it is not a substitute for medical care.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Natural Medicine Facilitator. Psilocybin services are provided within the legal and regulatory scope of natural medicine facilitation, which includes screening, preparation, administration, and integration.
-
No. Outcomes are not guaranteed. Experiences vary from person to person, and psilocybin does not work the same way for everyone.
Meaningful change depends not only on the administration session, but also on readiness, preparation, support, integration, and how insights are carried into daily life.
-
Yes, it may. Many people come to this work while already engaged in therapy or other forms of support.
During screening and preparation, we can talk about how psilocybin services may fit alongside the therapeutic work you are already doing. Continued support from an outside therapist or provider may be recommended when appropriate.
-
Southwest Healing Center offers services for individuals, couples when appropriate, and small, intimate groups.
Couples and small groups require additional attention to screening, consent, relational dynamics, boundaries, privacy, expectations, and integration. Screening helps determine whether the format is appropriate.
-
Possibly. Preparation and integration support may be available for people who are not completing administration with me, depending on fit, scope, location, and the kind of support being requested.
This is a good question to ask during the initial inquiry.
Safety, Fit, and Eligibility
-
Experiences vary widely and cannot be fully predicted. Some people experience changes in perception, sensory awareness, body awareness, sense of time, or sense of self.
Some people experience heightened emotions, insight, clarity, connection, laughter, discomfort, uncertainty, or unexpected material. The experience is often non-linear and deeply personal.
-
My role is non-directive. I do not guide the content of your experience, interpret what is happening, or try to control the journey.
I remain present to support safety and comfort, offer grounding or reassurance if needed, and respect your inner healer and autonomy throughout the process.
-
Difficult or unexpected material can come up, and challenging moments ARE a normal part of the process.
Preparation helps build emotional capacity and grounding tools before the session. During administration, I remain present to support safety and comfort. Afterward, integration helps make sense of what emerged and how it may connect to your life.
-
No. Prior experience is not required.
If you have never taken mushrooms before, preparation and screening are especially important so you understand the process, possible effects, risks, and supports available. If you have had past experiences with psilocybin, we can talk about those during inquiry and screening.
